How to Make a Bowl Cozy That Fits Your Bowl

My husband asked me to make him a fabric ‘something’ to hold his soup bowl so he wouldn’t burn his hands. He thought he was inventing something. He was not. 🙂

Bowl cozies have been around forever. But when I went looking for a pattern to make one that actually fit his bowl, I found that every pattern out there makes one or two specific sizes.

I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of different bowls. Different sizes, different shapes. A cozy sized for a standard soup bowl swims around a small cereal bowl. One sized for a wide, shallow pasta bowl gaps and flops on a taller, narrower one. And maybe I just wanted a cozy that fits around my Ben and Jerry’s pint!

And maybe I don’t even want those flaps sticking out on the sides that so many traditional bowl cozies have.

I went down a rabbit hole figuring out the math to make custom bowl cozies so you don’t have to.

You don’t have to do the math

This video walks through how it works — worth watching if you want to understand why the measurements matter.

But if you’d rather just make the thing, I have a pattern with a calculator that you can use to make a pattern that fits YOUR bowl. It comes with complete instructions and videos, so it’s easy to make a cozy that fits YOUR bowl, even if you’ve never made a bowl cozy before.
