Understand the map, then decide whether to follow one
You know how GPS tells you to turn left and you just do it — no idea why, no idea what’s down that road? Ever try to find the nearest place to get gas along the way and have the whole plan fall apart?
If you just follow enough quilt patterns blindly, you can get really good at following directions. But you don’t get any better at improvising or creating your own designs.
I teach quilters to understand the big picture map — so following a pattern is a choice, not a necessity. Not because patterns are bad, but because you’re smart enough to know why you’re doing each step. Then when something doesn’t work out right, or if you just want to make it unique? You can figure out why or how.

Why understanding changes everything
I grew up in a house where nothing ever got sent out to be fixed. My dad had a good career and a PhD, and he still fixed the dishwasher, the roof, the brakes on the car himself — with me right there handing him tools.
He never once acted like understanding something was above me. So I never assumed it was above me either.
That’s the whole reason I teach quilting this way. Not because knowing why a seam allowance matters makes you a better quilter overnight — but because once you understand it, you stop needing someone standing over your shoulder telling you what to do next.
