How to Trim Half Square Triangles: 3 Easy Methods for Beginners

Stop Feeling Overwhelmed by HST Trimming

Ever get that sinking feeling when a pattern says “trim your HSTs to size”? You’re not alone.

Even as an experienced quilter, I used to resent the whole trimming process. But here’s what I discovered: those trimmed half square triangles make everything else so much easier.

Why Trim Half Square Triangles?

Let’s talk about the “why” first – because understanding makes all the difference.

Your pattern might say you need a 2-inch finished half square triangle. That means it needs to be 2.5 inches square before you sew it into your quilt (to allow for those quarter-inch seams on each side).

But here’s the thing: half square triangles tend to come out a little wonky. Even when you’re careful, the edges aren’t perfectly straight and the points don’t line up exactly.

That’s why patterns tell you to make them slightly larger and then trim them down.

The result? Perfect points, straight edges, and piecing that goes together beautifully. Those few minutes of trimming save you hours of frustration later.

Method 1: Using a Standard Quilting Ruler (After Pressing)

This is my favorite method – everything gets trimmed off and it’s very peaceful.

Here’s how:

  1. Start with your HST seam running horizontal
  2. Line up the 45-degree line on your ruler with that center seam
  3. Make sure you have a little extra fabric beyond your target size on two sides
  4. Trim those two sides
  5. Flip it over and line up your ruler with the edges you just cut
  6. Trim the remaining two sides

You’ll end up with a perfectly square half square triangle with the seam going straight to the point.

Method 2: Standard Quilting Ruler (Before Pressing)

Some quilters prefer to trim before pressing open. Here’s how that works:

  1. Keep your HST folded (not pressed open yet)
  2. Line up your target measurement on the seam line (not the fabric edges)
  3. Cut two sides
  4. Press open
  5. Trim off the little “dog ear” corners

This method means less cutting of sides, but you still need to trim those corners.

Method 3: Using a Specialty HST Ruler

There are lots of specialty rulers designed specifically for trimming half square triangles. They generally work in two ways:

After pressing: Similar to using a standard ruler, but with built-in guides for the diagonal line and your finished size.

Before pressing: Line up the seam with the ruler’s guide, trim two sides, then use the ruler’s corner trimmer to remove those dog ears after pressing.

The Bottom Line

I used to think trimming was just busy work. Now I actually enjoy sitting down with a pile of half square triangles and squaring them all up. There’s something satisfying about seeing those perfect points line up.

Understanding why you’re trimming changes everything. It’s not about making more work for yourself – it’s about preventing the overwhelm that comes when nothing lines up right later.

Take your time. Understand the process. And watch how much easier your piecing becomes.
